Exploring Central Park: A Comprehensive Guide

Covering 840 acres and stretching 2.5 miles from north to south, it’s the largest park in New York City.

Starting Point: 110th Street in Harlem:

Our adventure begins at 110th Street, where Central Park's northern section starts.

Discovering the North Woods

We’re walking through the northern part of Central Park, starting with the North Woods, a secluded forest area. This little piece of wilderness is home to impressive geological features like giant boulders and hills. Some even say foxes and other wildlife roam here!

Notable Water Bodies

Next, we come to The Harlem Meer, one of the seven notable bodies of water in Central Park. It’s a beautiful spot for birdwatching—many visitors come to see various bird species, including Canadian geese and ducks.

Lasker Rink

Another highlight in the north of Central Park is the Lasker Rink, which transforms into a swimming pool in the summer! It’s a great spot for ice skating during winter months.

Fort Clinton and Scenic Views

Fort Clinton offers a peek into history with its cannons and incredible views of Harlem. This overlooked area is definitely worth visiting, especially on a sunny day.

The Ravine and Waterfall


Welcome to The Ravine, a nature preserve that feels worlds away from the city. While exploring, I stumbled upon a hidden waterfall, a stunning sight amid the winter landscape.

Architectural Wonders: Glen Span Arch

Our next stop is the Glen Span Arch, an impressive architectural feature that spans a picturesque glen, complete with waterfalls and rock formations.

The Jacqueline Kennedy Reservoir

As we move southward, we arrive at the Jacqueline Kennedy Reservoir, where you can catch glimpses of Midtown and iconic buildings like the Empire State Building.

Museum Mile


Nearby is Museum Mile, featuring several notable museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. While not in the park itself, they’re essential stops for culture enthusiasts.

Cleopatra’s Needle

Did you know there’s an ancient Egyptian obelisk in Central Park? Known as Cleopatra’s Needle, it’s 3,500 years old and one of the oldest structures in NYC.

Sheep Meadow

Sheep Meadow is a beautiful lawn that’s closed in winter but offers breathtaking views during warmer months.

The Mall


One of the park's most famous areas, The Mall, is known for its straight pathway lined with impressive statues and trees.

Central Park Zoo

No visit to Central Park is complete without a stop at the Central Park Zoo, made famous by the movie "Madagascar."

The Pond and Woolman Rink
